The Championships, Wimbledon, is the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Since the inception of the tournament in 1877 Wimbledon has grown from strength to strength, embodying its core principles of fairness, equality, and conduct, into a truly global centre of sporting excellence.
Held in late June and early July, the tournament is one of the big annual Grand Slam tennis events, alongside the Australian, French and U.S. Open. Wimbledon is the only one played on grass, which holds its own appeal and challenges to the players.
Wimbledon is held over 13 days and during that time a grand total of 675 matches are played with over half a million people attending over that time frame each year. Despite this entry to the show courts are exceptionally difficult to attain, with the only guaranteed entry being official Wimbledon Debenture Tickets or via official Corporate Hospitality packages.
The show courts themselves both have retractable roofs, whereas in the past matches would have been postponed, play can now continue with a short delay, this convenience is one of many modernizations that the AELTC has pioneered.
A trip to Wimbledon is a very special occasion, from Kentish strawberries and cream, to on the edge of your seat marathon plays from the best in the world of tennis, this is the one event that you will never want to miss.
